The CHC33021 Certificate III in Individual Support is a comprehensive course designed for those aspiring to work in community, home, or residential care settings. This qualification emphasises role understanding, focusing on working under supervision as part of a multidisciplinary team, and providing person-centred support to individuals who may require assistance due to ageing, disability, or other reasons. It covers a wide range of factual, technical, procedural, and theoretical knowledge, vital for roles in this sector, ensuring adherence to Australian standards and legislation.
The course comprises 9 core units and 6 elective units, allowing for specialisation according to learners’ interests or career goals. Core topics include individualised support, empowerment, supporting independence and wellbeing, and recognising healthy body systems, among others.
Electives provide further specialisation options. Additionally, to obtain this qualification, learners must complete at least 120 hours of practical work, as per the Assessment Requirements. This qualification arms learners with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively support diverse groups in a community or healthcare setting, in compliance with industry standards and legislative requirements.

Our program adopts a blended delivery model, combining various teaching methods to optimise the learning experience. This includes trainer-led synchronous online Zoom classroom sessions, ensuring real-time interaction and guidance. To complement these sessions, the course also incorporates structured self-paced online study, enabling learners to learn at their own rhythm. Further enhancing the learning process is a mandatory work placement. This comprehensive approach ensures a well- rounded educational experience, catering to different learning styles and needs.
The duration of the course is set at 12 months, consisting of 46 weeks of instructional delivery followed by 4 to 6 weeks dedicated to completing 120 hours of work placement, with a minimum commitment of 20 hours per week. The unit structure is designed around single units, each released online according to a predetermined delivery and assessment schedule. Assessments are varied and include written knowledge tests, projects, case studies, practical demonstrations, and assessor observations, all tailored to comprehensively evaluate the learner’s understanding and application of the course material.
Hader Institute of Education provides support to all learners through the trainer and the Hader Institute Learner Support Officer.
The assessment is conducted using a combination of realistic workplace tasks, projects, knowledge tests, response to case studies and completing practical demonstrations. This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to organise, provide and monitor personal support services for a person within the limits established by an individualised plan. The individualised plan refers to the support or service provision plan developed for the person accessing the service and may have different names in different organisations.
CHCCCS038 - Facilitate the empowerment of people receiving support
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to facilitate the empowerment of people receiving support, and to deliver rights-based services using a person-centred approach. It should be carried out in conjunction with individualised plans.
CHCCCS040 - Support independence and wellbeing
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide individualised services in ways that support independence, as well as physical and emotional wellbeing.
CHCCCS041 - Recognise healthy body systems
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to work with basic information about healthy body systems and the impacts of ageing and disability. It includes recognising and reporting any changes in healthy bodies involving people who are ageing or living with disability. Any identified issues of concern to be reported to the supervisor or professional health staff.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to identify and work within the legal and ethical frameworks that apply to an individual job role.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required for a worker to participate in safe work practices to ensure their own health and safety, and that of others in work environments that involve caring directly for clients. It has a focus on maintaining safety of the worker, the people being supported and other community members.

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to provide person-centred care and support to people living with dementia. It involves following an established individualised plan.

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to work effectively in a disability support work context. The unit covers meeting job requirements, complying with organisational requirements and working in a disability sector context.
CHCDIS012 - Support community participation and social inclusion
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to assist with supporting people with disability in community participation and social inclusion using a person-centred approach. This involves enabling people to make choices to maximise their participation in various community settings, functions and activities to enhance psychosocial wellbeing and lifestyle in accordance with the person’s needs and preferences.
CHCPAL003 - Deliver care services using a palliative approach
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to provide care for people with life-limiting illness and those within the normal ageing process using a palliative approach, as well as end-of-life care.
